Chris Johnstone

I’m an author, trainer and coach for resilience, wellbeing and active hope. My work over the last thirty years has focused on exploring what helps us face disturbing situations (whether in our own lives or the world) and respond in ways that nourish resilience and well-being. My books include Active Hope (co-authored with Joanna Macy) and Seven Ways to Build Resilience. Living in the north of Scotland, I teach online courses for Resilience, Wellbeing and Active Hope.

Background

After a first degree combining medicine and psychology, I qualified as a medical doctor in 1986, and as a GP in 1992. Training in a range of psychological intervention approaches, I then worked for nearly twenty years in a specialist mental health team treating people with addictions. Initially alongside my work in mental health, and then later replacing it, I’ve worked as a trainer and coach for resilience and wellbeing for over thirty years.

I became interested in meditation in the 1980s, while spending part of my medical training with the Sarvodaya movement in Sri Lanka. In the 1990s I did a course in meditation and mental health, after this integrating simple mindfulness practices into my wellbeing and resilience training work.
